I found this in an old album inside a small packet on which it was marked Scott 85 with D grill.

But on the packet the price was given as only $18.50, which is also written on the back of the stamp. What do people think?

It would be the best if you look closely at the grill under oblique light and just count the vertical rows, maybe not everything is visible on the scan. Also, it would be interesting for example if you see the last horizontal row at the bottom more complete then or if it's more incomplete.

I guess you know the grill types and how much rows they have, if not, here you go: http://www.stampsmarter.com/learnin...8Grills.html

Thanks, stamperix. This is the first time I've come across a grill, so I don't know the types.

Unfortunately I get 12 columns by 14 rows, which doesn't exist!

At least this explains the mistake - the Scott catalogue gives the SIZE of the D grill as 12mm by 14mm.

jimjam, this is an F Grill, Scott #94. There are 12 columns, as you said, but at least 16 rows: one row is cut off by the top perforations (a grill point from this row can be seen clearly on the third perf tip from the right) and traces of a row are visible under the bottom-most fully-visible row.

Thanks, dudley. Explains why it was only $18.50!

I forgot to ask: would a horizontal strip of #11 (4 stamps,1 damaged) with neat pen cancels be worth anything or are multiples common or this issue?

Multiples of classic US stamps are always desirable, even if they are not uncommon.
