I know absolutely nothing about stamps. What do I look for and what would its value be?

Hi KZYC, welcome to the forum.
This stamp is fairly common and is of little financial value. There were over 3,000,000,000 of them produced. It was issued in 1954, and for ID purposes, it is unitrade 340. There are a few special papers (rib oan fluorescent papers), and tagging that may add a few pennies to it, but need special tools (such as a UV light) to identify.

kzyc welcome to the community.

If you are looking for value, most stamps do not bring it because of the massive printing of stamps since the early 1900's. Most stamps are printed at a rate of close to 1/2 a billion or more. That is one stamp for every person in North America, and only a small percentage of people are collectors.

If you would like to identify and value a lot of stamps quickly, your local library would likely have a stamp catalogue that would help you. Personally I use the Scott catalogue, but there are other good catalogues too.

Welcome KYZE to the forum.

Adding to Gilles le timbre's post, the two stamps are catalogued at $0 cents each. However, that is a minimum catalogue value based on what the average stamp dealer would charge for a single stamp purchase. The catalogue mentioned below does not have minimums less than 25 cents. Collectors would normally pay much less when buying multiples at one time or from other collectors.

In Canada, your library may have a copy of The Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps, which is the best source of information on Canadian philately.
