I would love for this to be authentic. It would allow me to buy all the International Polar Year stamps out there without blinking and then some! However, Scott's says that counterfeits are plentiful, and given what I paid for the unpicked mix containing this specimen (about $5), I am doubtful.

Anyone here with expertise to tell me straight off whether this is real or forged? Or do I have to pay real money to hear the most likely answer?

Clark

In my opinion, if you find a Buenos Aires 'barquito' stamp like this one, chances are about 98% it is a forgery.
The real ones are not that sophisticated in printing, but this one is far too rough.

Sorry, Clark, but it's definitely a forgery.

I reduced your scan and put it side by side with a genuine (ignore color differences). Forgery on left, genuine on right.

The ones I have are also heavy. Obvious forgeries. They at least fill the spots in my album.

I've got a set of 8. I'm going to assume they are forgeries of one kind or another. I'll post something in the trade section to see if anyone is interested in their very own set. Maybe some of the newer members would like a set.

Kind Regards,

Dave N.

Edwin.. I agree. I guess I have always known about forgeries and cindy's and try as much as possible not to get fooled.
One of the main reasons I collect US and Canada.. and territories..

I've personally given up the hope of finding a "gem", all the sources in my area are either already bagged by another collector or non-existent... I live in a state with 6 million people, and I have only found 3 stamp stores in the state and they are all hours away. I cruise the web and local papers for auctions and such. no joy. So now I just work on the stuff I have had for 20 years that were tucked away and work on expanding my US collection.. oh and having a complete UN New York collection (that is with in budget) But I do get excited when someone else finds a gem or possible gem... I have been very excited for barbs collection, it is amazing.

And then there are you old timers.. phil, rod et el.. who seem to have every stamp out here.... I am jealous..

Stampvirgin I agree, I really enjoy seeing what everyone finds each day. its fun to login everyday to see what people dig out of their boxes!

I don't expect to find a rare stamp, but if I think I have its great to have this place with people I now trust to tell me what I do or don't have and I'll feel good about it.

Here's my forgery.

According the copy of Album Weeds as "Digitized by Google", the genuine stamp has a hyphen between BUENOS and AIRES. However, it does not match any of the descriptions for the three forged sets.

As an aside, any suggestions for obtaining the latest edition of Album Weeds?
