Here are two examples from the large hoard of stamps I just inherited. Scott 245 is the 2 cent King George VI, part of the 1938 Royal Family Issue. The first example has a pretty clear crack between the two stamp, above the F and all the way to the second N in Foundland.

My second copy is damaged and wasn't quite clear at first, due to the placement of the perforations:

But then I noticed the distinguishing features, circled in Black in the examples below. (The red circle is the cracked plate, which is hidden by the perforations in the second example.)

Does anyone know if this is a known variety, and the value (if any)? Thanks in advance.

I just found a third copy of the same cracked plate ... this time on a horizontal pair. The right-hand stamp has the same jagged, sloping line, starting in the F and continuing to the last N in the upper Newfoundland. (The color was darkened to best see the crack.)

Partime, it is now a known variety officially. I look for these cracks ( and other varieties ) on the Transportation Coils and have found quite a few. Problem always is that you need at least two copies to make sure it is recurring - a constant plate variety. You have done so! Congrats,

Peter

Well, semi-officially. Do you ever attempt to get these items published / uploaded to the next version of Scott's?

Nice catch Partime. Now if you could find someone with a plate proof showing that horizontal line that would be awesome. I would be very curious to know if it was there on the initial printing, or did the plate just start wearing out.

It is interesting that you have multiple copies showing the same plate crack. There are the Newfoundland study group at http://bnaps.org/studygroups/newfie...ie_intro.htm and the Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue at http://nfldstamps.com

Nice find and pretty clearly a crack.

Having multiples makes this one easier to spot. People collecting singles off-center high, will never see this.

Thanks Jogil and others. I'll contact the Newfoundland Study Group in the near future and see what they think.

Update: The Newfoundland Study Group (Malcolm) replied that they are not aware of this plate crack, and have offered to put a note in an upcoming issue asking their members for assistance.

In addition, Saskatoon Stamp Centre replied that they had nothing about this in their database, and they agreed that it was uncommon.

So, the search continues.
