It was an excellent documentary . I have retained it on my "Planner". I think it was very honest. It did seem to place Stamp Collecting in a "time and place" which was not "here and now".
The Trafalgar Square post office where the modern queue were not interested in stamps and it provided a stark contrast with the lines for the 1966 England Winners (World Cup) stamp. It was in many ways the high watermark (no pun intended) of Stamp Collecting. It was widely believed it would be a valuable stamp but of course it isn't. For many, it was the end of an Age of Innocence. Too many "investment opportunities" advertised at the back of non-philatelic magazines and the public grew tired of being ripped off.
Essentially all collectors have been ripped off at least once. Many think it is part of the learning curve. To others, it is a case of "fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me".
It was a golden age in many ways but the Goose that laid the golden eggs has long since been killed off.

Stamp Collecting is little more than Memorabalia with a touch of Nostalgia. How else can we explain 15 British Game of Thrones stamps later this month? We have had the Doctor Who stamps, the Comedians, the Comic book characters, Star Wars.

There was a previous thread on this. I found it fine, others weren't keen. I'd be interested to know how many of its modern commemorative issues the Post Office actually sells, given that they aren't pushed in post offices and tend to be aimed at niche markets. Presumably enough to cover costs, but the days when we spotty adolescents trotted along to buy the new issues - or the lower values that we could afford - are long gone. I still recall my mortification at discovering that, unbeknown to me, the "England Winners" stamp had been issued. As you say, my angst was misplaced!
