I do not know much about the 1898 Canada imperial Postage stamps and hoping that there are members who can help me out with a write up I am doing for these stamps in my album. I think two of the stamps are muddy waters changelings could a member tell me what the colours are for the muddy water stamps if indeed they are. Could someone also let me know if they have information on the other two stamps which would help me in my write up. ***Image tag fixed***

Hi freeway1 and welcome to the SC Forum !
Unitrade Specialized catalogue of Canadian Stamps, 2018 ed notes the following #s and corresponding colors:
85: 2c black, lavender & carmine 85i: 2c black, grey and carmine 86: 2c black, blue and carmine 86b:2c black, deep blue and carmine
Based on this, 3 of your stamps appear not to present one of these 4 colors. I cannot explain what happened to these 3 stamps.

Adding to Renden's post, I think the top row stamps are both 86 and are both changelings, and the bottom row are both 86b, but the right side stamp is a changeling as well. Here are three examples of what I believe are "muddy waters", but I am not truly knowledgeable about this issue. The first two are blurry as I had to triple and double their respective sizes to illustrate them better. According to page 66 of the 2018 printed The Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps, "the so-called muddy water variety is a colour changeling caused by oxidation and is NOT a printing variety.". |

In the April-June 2003 (Vol. 60, No. 2) issue of BNA Topics, p.34, John E. Milks presents a rather technical discussion of color on he Map stamp. That issue of Topics is available online at http://www.bnatopics.org |

Thanks BlackJag for your comments - I had not read the page 66 writing in Unitrade 2018 of the muddy water variety - even so, the term "muddy water" is new to me and it is great to understand a bit more about this 1898, Dec 7 Imperial Penny Postage printings. Question: what happens to "muddy water" stamps and classifications/valuations ? Thanks again- Rene |

I don't know how they are valued, but assume that they are basically damaged stamps.
I have not read the John E. Milks article. |

Apparently you can turn these back to the original shades with bleach very easily. It is caused by oxidisation.
I was reading about it the other day as I have a couple, but please dont ask me where.
In Tomlinsons the canadian map stamp of 1898, on page 47 it says.
Colour changelings; These exist to some degree, especially with the red colours oxidised into various shades of red-brown, golden or blackish-brown shades. Any copies kept for years in a damp place invariably produce many of these varieties
I would not use bleach on any stamp. |

What a fantastic resource the BNAPS has produced over the years. I was always of the understanding they were just two shades of Oceans, Blue and Grey (Lavender) |

Do not use the Hydrogen Peroxide use in Hair Products. You need to use the 3% Solution Hydrogen Peroxide from the Pharmacy. |
