Thinking that it is about time that I updated my ancient Gibbons "Commonwealth & British Empire 1840-1970" catalogue I turned to ebay.

I was surprised to come across a PDF of the 2012 edition for sale. The same seller also lists the 2014 Gibbons "Stamps of the World Simplified" as well as the 6 volume Scott 2013 catalogue in PDF form.

As far as I know the Gibbons catalogues were never released as PDF versions, and I have no idea about the Scott, so I doubt that they are legitimate. However before reporting the seller I would appreciate if if anyone could confirm that neither Scott nor Gibbons released PDF versions of their catalogues.

Clive

I can say that I have owned Scott catalogs issued on CD which contained pdf files. I am not aware that these files have been authoritatively released on other media, however (but I could certainly be wrong).

I emailed both Amos and Gibbons. The former are looking into it, but it is unlikely that Gibbons will see my email until Monday morning.
I could report the listings to ebay in the interim, but am loathe to unless I can confirm that they were not distributed as PDFs

Scott catalogues have definitely been released in pdf format. I have a set.

I've never heard of Gibbons releasing their catalogues in a digital format, but of course that's no guarantee they haven't done so in the recent past.

I was the one selling them Catalogues. 20 bucks each. There is more to them being on ebay. All sorted out.

I guess you were the one who reported me. I knew I was gonna get to the bottom of it, soon

Were they genuine from the publishers, or pirated copies? If the former, then I am sorry I reported you, but as you can see from this thread I first tried to ascertain whether they were genuine or not before reporting, and reported to the publishers for them to sort out and not to ebay itself.

If pirated however, I am not sorry, you should be ashamed to be selling that sort of thing.

Perhaps then maybe you should have contacted me trough ebay, and I would be happy to answer your questions. Lots of people do

But like I said, all is good. I am happy that my efforts to get to the bottom of it have paid off

Happy stamping Mr. Clive

Scott Catalogs were at one point published by AMos Media as PDFs on CD-ROM, but that stopped well before the 2013 edition, so if you have a 2013 Scott catalog in PDF it's a bootleg that someone created. It was not officially sold that way by Amos Media.

The only e-version of the 2013 catalog was within an iPhone/iPad app, so if these are not scanned from printed catalogs, then someone brute-force cracked the encryption on the data in the Scott Catalogue app.

Either way, they're not legitimate.

The timeline shows that less than 2 hours went by before asking the question and reporting to the publishers.

Your point being what?

If the publisher's managed to get ebay to take the items down, then clearly they were pirated. And despite me asking philatelycanada outright, he has still not denied that they were bootlegs.

I have no regrets.

I am not sure who or what you are referring to, but if you are attempting to stalk me, may I remind you that stalking, like selling pirated goods on ebay is illegal in Canada. So I can and will get the RCMP involved if this carries on any further.

So I suggest at this point that you leave me alone and just chalk it down to experience, and maybe in the future think twice before trying to sell what does not belong to you.

The last time Scott released a catalog in PDF format was the 2009 catalog, and it was heavily pirated. Not by stamp collectors per-se. But people were making their own CDs and selling them on ebay and other places with a label printed from an ink-jet printer. Unsuspecting collectors were buying them "used" at a pretty good discount not knowing they were pirated copies.

That fiasco is what made Scott so gun shy when it came to making another digital offering.
