Could someone chime in on this stamp and give me your opinion. I have seen it, or similar to this one listed on sites such as ebay for anywhere from $5 to $400. I have tried to research but come up more confused that ever. any help would be valuable. thanks

I am not a Heligoland expert, but there is a very High probability it is a reprint. It is a group of Islands off the coast of Germany that were controlled by the British from 1807 to 1890. That is the reason for the head of Queen Victoria on the stamp. While there are genuine unused examples, most unused stamps are reprints.

Thank you so much. I collect pretty much only 19th century US so I was not real familiar with this stamp and my Scott catalogue is not much help. Oh but it would be nice to have an original.

Heligoland was ceded by Great Britain to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar.

As for the stamps, there have been so many reprints that it would take years of study to become an expert.

The Scott catalogue states that the reprints of the 1pf are on very white paper (which yours appears to be) and have white gum.

Based on Lowe's notes, if I had to stick my neck out I'd say yours is the 1882 Berlin reprint.
