And we wonder why less experienced folks have trouble with this topic? How many threads do we have where people are convinced that they have a rare Washington/Franklin based upon faulty measuring of the design? 25? 50? 100?

I really wish the author and article had gone into more detail and provide readers with more useful info than just calling out design dimensions.

All the well written articles on W/F's still don't help me :) I think patience is needed which rules me out.

The article talks about accurate measurements. I've found (as a toolmaker in a previous life) that the best way to measure small items such as stamps is to use a pair of dividers .

I would like to find a way to measure the distance between two 1851 Franklins to find a plate column to go with a row.

The secret to W/F is to sort by perfs first, then by watermark where applicable, then worry about types after, when you will know what the options are. After a while seeing a rotary should become pretty obvious, they are so much wider then flats. The same with the offsets, once you have seen some they usually become pretty obvious.
