Scratches, Dots, And Blurs

Here is a couple of oddities that I ran across whn I was training to be a Printer/Lithographer in High School.

This is what we in printing class nick named "TAILS"

Below is a "tail" on a Scott 137



Below is a "tail" on a Scott 106avs

On the green Admiral, the tail looks to be black ink and not green. Is that just an optical illusion, and its really green?

Yes txstamp...It is black (maybe)

Splatter from another run not wiped or whatever...But yes, it is black/dark green/blue.

Here is a Newfoundland Scott 186 with what looks like plate scratch marks on left and right side of frame.

Also look at the word "colonization"..."Z" is backwards.

The Newfoundland 186 4c red, looks like some type of guideline or alignment marks, Middle of the stamp, showing only in the margins?

The Newfoundland 92 6c claret. I believe this stamp was printed lithography using stone(from Newfy Newsletter, In the preliminary work it seems incredible that the engraver, an expert in his line, in preparing the design for the transfer to the lithographic stone, July 89) so after a few hundred printings, the stone would wear out quickly causing those printing varities. I'm sure that eventually each stamp could be identified and plated to its position on the sheet. (especially true for the 1c green).

Hi Robert, I think we have to look at the scott 85 only for major varieties. When I put under microscope, all have sommes differences. My opinion stay on the way those stamps was printed, and the time momentum to be printed. I have almost 20 pieces and no one identical. Me personally I do not have answer. Start with colors, go to the printing dimensions and many printing plates defaults.

wert. On the 137 imperf pair. Is that ink pulls on the left side of both stamps, and the D on the left stamp.

It seems that lithographed (as opposed to other printing processes)stamps are especially rich in these sorts of flyspeck oddities. Is this a valid observation?
