Possible postmaster bisect. I believe a 1 cent rate is possible from Hadley to Hadley, and there were some stamp shortages in 1895. The (1/2) stamp is tied on the right side. Any thoughts welcome.
can you post the back of the cover? Has the cover been reduced at right possibly cutting-off another stamp? If it was a drop letter why would the sender write out the county and state?
The cover has not been reduced on the right. There are no markings on the reverse. What you are looking at on the right side is the folded right side of a standard envelope. The entire envelope is normal.
I see what you are getting at with the county/state, but it appears as a genuine drop letter. I'm also not sure why you would put that on a drop letter...
Also, the previous owner of this cover did not advertise it as a bisect. It was part of a lot of larger covers I purchased. When I look through each cover, I discovered this possible bisect.
If it is some type of fake (i.e., the full two cent stamp was hanging over the edge, trimmed, and the cancellation extended), it was done a while back.
Strange address. Since it was going locally why add the county? How many Hadley NY's could there be? Local cover, very neat with the stamp right up against the corner, seems suspiciously philatelic to me.
