Does anyone else think about framing stamps? Ones they particularly love?

I have a really nice (to me) collection of Penny Reds - and rather than having them in an album I was looking at getting them in to a nice frame so I can see them all the time.

I think it would with other things as well. I have photos of the local Swans and the mint set of Swan stamps from GB that I think would look nice together.

A 'must' is to frame with UV filtered glass. It does not matter if the frame is hung in indirect light, UV filtered glass must be used to prevent fading.

Even with UV glass, the stamps will fade over time. UV glass only filters out 90% of the UV rays. That 10% still does damage.

There are UV glass coatings which claim 99% https://www.framedestination.com/fr...lear-uv.html

Other manufacturers offer glass which meets or exceeds ISO 18902 and and ISO 18916 (at least 97% UV protection).

But I agree that I would not frame any rare stamp and nothing in direct sunlight.

I recently framed a sheet if French stamps - see bottom of Rod's thread - but they are pretty much worthless in money terms.

I have quite a lot of cigarette cards, postcards, football pictures etc framed.

I am looking into framing some stamps (penny blacks) and I was told by a framing shop that there is "museum glass" that offers 99.9% UV protection. Obviously I will not let direct sunlight hit frame but what about LED lights? Any thoughts on this?

They were blowing smoke. "Museum glass" is actually a registered trademark of a specific manufacturer. It is 99% effective at reflecting UV light. I know of no glass which is greater than 99%.

Over time mounting any stamp in a frame and hanging it on the wall will cause the stamp to fade over time. Using "museum glass" or equivalent, keeping it out of any sunlight, should keep fading to a minimum. Under those conditions it may take years but make no mistake about it, the stamp will undergo color changes.
