Is This A Green Color Shift On Scott #1478?

The more my twin sister and I dig through our Granddady's collection the more weird stamps we come across.

We're also learning a lot about EFO's (which we find fascinating) and would like to learn more about the different types.

For instance this Scott stamp #1478 would be classified as having a color shift, correct?

Yes, it is. And it is a very nice one, well worth keeping. The picture does not appear very sharp on my computer but there also seems to be a problem with the red. From what I can see it may be a short "doctors blade" to the left of the bicentennial emblem. Also some red in the green above the emblem that I do not recall being there.

What is a "doctors blade"? My sis found another #1478 stamp in Grandaddy's collection so I went ahead and scanned it because there is a big difference between the two. I also re-scanned the first stamp in hopes of making it a bit sharper for you.

In the first image the stamp with the "doctors blade" also appears to have a red shadow coming from the text. (which isn't seen in the second stamp) Is there a word or terminology used to describe this sort of thing?




Here is the second stamp we found with a green color shift. There is some red which does appear above the emblem but w/out the "doctor's blade". Also I noticed the text is aligned (and less blurry) than the first.

Your second example is indeed shifted, here is one which is not shifted.


I have not studied this particular stamp but it could be that well aligned stamps are the rare ones. Have you searched through ebay and looked to see what them 'norm' is?

This series has poor registration om most of the stamps. You might get a premium for one that is perfectly aligned.

Thank you guys so much for the additional information. I haven't checked ebay. This was just one of those stamps that sort of jumped out because of the color shift.

Here is another stamp from the same series, with a nice yellow colour shift. Used on paper.
