An interesting story here. This is a card from the trans-Atlantic flight of the Zeppelin ZR-3 from Germany to New York. The ZR-3 became the USS Los Angeles in service with the US Navy. Hundreds of pounds of mail was carried on the flight, so much that the German Post Office declared on September 12th, 1924 that no additional mail could be taken on board. Two exceptions were made, 1) for Georg H. Jager who petitioned that his philatelic mail be delivered, and 2) for crew members on the flight. General mail had a post mark of September 15, 1924. This card is postmarked October 10, 1924 two days before the flight. The card is not one of Jager's so maybe it from a crew member. The question is was Hans Holdt/Boldt part of the crew? To add to the story the card does not have the NY City receiving mark dated October 15, 1924. Not on the flight, or put in the pocket of the crew member.

The text says 'With airship 2RIII over Friedrichshafen'.
The only question I would have is why would a member of the crew present for postmarking a postcard he would deliver to the States himself? ... unless he collects Zeppelin stuff ...

It was common for crew members to carry mail as a memento or for friends and family.
Thanks for the translation.

... and to throw away postcards over Germany during the first flights, offering financial prizes to those finding them and posting them back to Count Zeppelin

I don't know much about Zep covers, but I would guess that a crew member to that time lived near Friedrichshafen, more or less. Hans Boldt was from Berlin and so was not living near the Bodensee area. Just an idea to think about. I also did not find more information about him.

I am with Zepman.

He probably gave the card to a crewmember he knew/or simply asked, to take it with him on the trip.
