This Ramsar site, at an elevation of 4000 meters, is home to birds unique to the Puno region, such as the Andean avocet, the guayata, the Puna duck, the Puna flamingo, the Andean gull, the Puna chorlito and the giant gallareta. The site is also visited by migrating birds during the summer.
