Lakes, Marshes, Mangroves, And Wetlands On Stamps

Ukraine issued a souvenir sheet in 2004 showing some of the most common bird species in the Danube Delta: Mute Swan, Eurasian Spoonbill, Pygmy Cormorant, Great White Egret, Greylag Goose, and Pelican; also Yellow Water Lilies and Reed Grass.

The Romanian sheet of 2004 shows a few more of the birds found in the Danube Delta: Grey Heron, Mallard Duck, Crested Grebe and Great White Pelican. Note UPU emblem.

The Romanian sheet of 2009 featured birds of the Danube Delta which aren't seen in such great numbers: Kingfisher, Black-winged Stilt, Great White Egret and Saker Falcon.

Lagoa das Furnas is located on the island of São Miguel, Azores archipelago. This crater lake is surrounded by volcanic landscape with fumaroles, mud pools, and thermal springs. The lake is home to common pochard (Aythya ferina), common teal (Anas crecca) and grey heron (Ardea cinerea) shown in the minisheet.

Alakol Biosphere Reserve

Alakol Biosphere Reserve is located in the desert zone of Eurasia in the central part of the Alakol inter-mountain depression. The wetlands of the reserve are of global significance as a habitat and as a nesting site for water birds.
The minisheet shows Lake Alakol with relict gull (Larus relictus), dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), and Balkhash perch (Perca schrenkii).

Trebonsko covers a flat pond basin of 700 km2 along the Lužnice river in southern Czech Republic. It was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1977.
The minisheet features a diverse fauna and flora population which includes Great Egret (Egretta alba), Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), Bridewort (Spiraea salicifolia) White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina), European White Waterlily (Nymphaea alba), among other species.

Šumava Biosphere Reserve

The Sumava Biosphere Reserve includes a substantial part of the Bohemian Forest that straddles the border between the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. Forests, meadows and pastures as well as bogs are characteristic of Sumava. Within the biosphere reserve, the Šumava Peatlands were designated as a Ramsar site in 1993, including mountain raised bogs, valley bogs, waterlogged spruce forests and riparian wetlands of the River Vltava.
The minisheet features Ring Ouzel, Western Capercaillie, Large Ringlet, Moorland Clouded Yellow, Narrow-leaved Marsh-orchid, Elk, Black Grouse, Common Hawker, Lynx, Three-toed Woodpecker, among other species.

Slitere National Park is located in Kurzeme Region on the west coast of Latvia. It is famous for the broadleaf forests covering former coastline and for the complex of dunes and inter-dune bogs. It is one of the best sites in the country for birdwatching.

Teici Nature Reserve is one of the largest areas of moss swamps in the Baltic region. The swamps provide nesting ground and resting place for a number of indigenous and migratory bird species.

The El Jocotal lagoon was declared a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention in January 1999. It is located in the Río Grande de San Miguel basin at the northeastern end of the Central Coastal Plain. The minisheet depicts the lagoon with Chaparrastique volcano in the background.

The Black River Lower Morass is the largest wetland in Jamaica. This Ramsar site is a refuge for two endangered species — the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee — as well as for a host of other plants and animals. The stamp set depicts Parottee Pond and water lilies.

Barguzinsky Nature Reserve is located in Buryatia province (Russia) on the west slope of the Barguzin Range, including the northeast shores of Lake Baikal and a part of the lake itself. The name of the reserve comes from the Barguzin River. The area of the reserve is 2,482 square km. It was created in 1916 to preserve and increase the numbers of sable (Martes zibellina).
