Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Pileated Woodpecker ( Dryocopus pileatus), designed by A. Kincses after a painting by French-American ornithologist John James Audubon, printed by offset, and issued by Hungary on June 19, 1985, Scott No. 2930. We consider ourselves lucky that a mated pair of these large, magnificent birds are frequent visitors to our backyard; here also is a photo of the male heartily partaking at our suet feeder last winter. - nethryk |

bfranton - Thanks. Our beebalms are now blossoming and the little hummers are giving them a good working over. Maybe I'll get a snapshot of them to post, too. - nethryk |

FYI, the piliated was also the inspiration, and model for our good friend Woody Woodpecker. We have one who lives in the woods across the road. But we call him Gregory. |

jamesw - I would readily agree with you about the Pileated being Woody Woodpecker's avian model, but curiously his Wikipedia article asserts that Woody was an "anthropomorphic acorn woodpecker" (Melanerpes formicivorus). The relevant Walter Lantz "Cartune" Encyclopedia entry ( http://lantz.goldenagecartoons.com/profiles/woody/ ) is highly amusing but sadly unhelpful on this point. All I know for sure is that the call of our birds actually sounds quite a bit like the deranged "song" (hoo hoo hoo ha ha) of Walter Lantz's animated character. - nethryk |

Hmmm. Guess you can't always believe what you hear. That stoopid woodpecker lied to me again! |

Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a somewhat more exotic bird: Saddle-billed Stork, issued by Burundi on June 10, 1965, Scott No. C13. - nethryk |

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a rare Black Stork ( Ciconia nigra) feeding its young, printed by photogravure, and issued by the USSR (Russia) on September 10, 1969 as one of a set of five wildlife stamps publicizing the Belovezhskaya Pushcha (Forest) Reservation which straddles the border of Russia and Belarus. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest which once spread across the European Plain. - nethryk |
