"Mandarin Ducks in the Snow," (Aix galericulata), designed after a detail from a painting by the eccentric Japanese artist Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), printed by photogravure, and issued by Japan on October 6, 1998, Scott No. 2634. I admire the sublime color palette used by the artist on this one.

Malak, welcome back, nice stamps.

The ducks are from Japan, the first two characters on the top are always on Japanese stamps.

The US bird is (I think) a partridge (looks like a peacock indeed) or a pheasant (I am not a bird person). I was once startled by one. I was sitting on the ground on the bank of a pond in the country, nice and quiet and peaceful, daydreaming away, and, unknown to me, a few feet away behind me, was a pheasant and her nest, hidden in the tall grass. She made such a clatter and noise rising up and flying away, mostly to attract my attention and divert my attention away from her nest and eggs so I would look at her, which I did, and only much later realized what she had done. Quite surprising, I almost fell in the pond.

Here is another stamp depicting Mandarin ducks, printed by lithogravure, and issued by Russia on August 1, 1970 as one stamp in a set of five publicizing the Sikhote-Alin Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located northeast of Vladivostok, Scott No. 3759.

Here is one for the pigeon fanciers out there: Homing pigeon, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by France on January 12, 1957, Scott No. 818, Y&T No. 1091. A common bird, uncommonly well-drawn.

PS Early yesterday evening we were pleasantly surprised during dinner when our female pileated woodpecker proudly presented her three new offspring to us in the backyard. They are about 2/3 adult size now, and we have read that they should be sticking close to their parents until sometime in September while they learn how to take care of themselves.

Nells, I am glad the postcard arrived but I do not remember sending a card to anyone. Perhaps Bee See with the similar avatar?

edit: Ooooooh, duh, you are just replying to my question above. Thank you.
Those are very nice China stamps.

Nice Antarctic stamp.

Nells250, I just finished reading here on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postcrossing about Postcrossing since I
hadn't heard of it before.
Quite a fun idea which should be good for drawing more people
into collecting stamps and hopefully even to this site.
