Nells250 - I'm glad you liked my two-tone swan stamp image.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), also known as the Lammergeier or Lammergeyer, designed by Austrian graphic artist Valentin Wurnitsch (1946- ), combined engraved by Alfred Nefe and photogravure, and issued by Austria on September 25, 1987 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Alpenzoo Innsbruck, Scott No. 1411.

Romania 1991 mini-sheet

Someone decided to use all or some of this bird set into Maxi-cards in 1992. I somehow acquired 4 individuals which are some of the worst produced maxi-cards I've ever seen. (The one below is one of the better of the 4)

Black-chinned Honeyeater Melithreptus gularis
Kagu Rhynochetos jubatus
American Robin Turdus migratorius
Oriental Magpie-Robin Copsychus saularis

Yellow-headed Blackbird Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus
Pel's Fishing Owl Scotopelia peli
Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher Ptilogonys caudatus
Puerto Rican Tody Todus mexicanus
White-rumped Shama Copsychus malabaricus
Red-headed Myzomela Myzomela erythrocephala

Here is an image of a stamp depicting Royal Penguins (Eudyptes schlegeli), designed and engraved by Claude Andréotto, and issued for use in French Southern and Antarctic Territories in 1979, Scott No. 82, plus a photo of a "Royal" argument in progress. Note: Scott misidentifies these birds as Rockhopper penguins.

New Zealand 2001 Penguins

Rockhopper - 40c
Sometimes called the punk-rockers of penguins for their spiky head plumage.

Little Blue Penguin - 80c
Just 25 centimetres tall and one kilogram in weight, this is the world's smallest penguin.

Snares Crested Penguin - 90c
One of the three crested species featured in this issue that only breed in New Zealand.

Erect-crested Penguin - $1.30
This penguin is an inhabitant of our sub-antarctic islands, living in huge colonies mainly on the Antipodes and Bounty Islands.

Fiordland Crested Penguin - $1.50
Only 3,000 breeding pairs remain of this relatively timid penguin that breeds in the rainforests along the rugged coastline of the south-west New Zealand.

Yellow-eyed Penguin - $2.00
Many New Zealanders have supported recent conservation efforts to protect the remaining population of around 1,600 pairs.

From the Romana Mini-sheet mentioned earlier, here are two of the atrociously produced Maxi-cards.

Red-headed Myzomela - Myzomela erythrocephala
The artwork has be cropped from a larger drawing leaving bits of birds poking out all around the card.

Montezuma Oropendola - Psarocolius montezuma
Similar bad cropping - what were they thinking!
Also, somewhere along the way the birds name is wrong

2001 Ross Dependency Penguins

There are 17 recognised species of penguin, found in many parts of the Southern Hemisphere - from icy Antarctica up to the Galapagos Islands on the Equator. The little blue penguin, found on and near Banks Peninsular, is considered by some biologists to be a different species.

Emperor Penguin - 40c, 90c and $1.50
The emperor is the largest of penguins, it is an impressive diver, capable of reaching depths of 550 metres, for up to 18 minutes.

Adelie Penguin - 80c, $1.30 and $2.00
With its dense plumage, short extremities and feathered bill it is well equipped for life in extreme cold.
