In the USA, today is National Go Birding Day!

Here is an image of a definitive stamp depicting turkey vultures (Cathartes aura falklandica), designed by George Roberts, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., and issued for use in Falkland Islands on December 10, 1946, Scott No. 92, plus a close-up photo. Pretty birdie!

A couple of beat up examples from Sweden I removed from a bubble pack.

The stamps depict an erne (or sea eagle), the largest bird of prey in northern Europe with a wing span of 200 x 24 cm. How do I know that?: it's microprinted on the stamp!

Another cool security feature is the die cut feather in the stamp.

Robert

Here is the extinct dodo. There was a very interesting monograph on the dodo on BBC online several weeks ago. Research shows that the old story of the dodo's extinction as a result of being clubbed to death and eaten by Dutch sailors is hogwash. Scientists are reasonably certain that the extinction was a result of the introduction of invasive species, including rats. The invasive species preyed on the dodos' eggs.

Also, it seems that just about all of the remaining dodo skeletons are composed of bones from various individuals.

Yes, this is a postage stamp. Although it doesn't say, it is from Germany. For the past 12 years or so, Germany has allowed private couriers to carry mail. This stamp is from the Nordkurier Briefdienst in Stralsund. It depicts penguins at the Ozeaneum in Stralsund. Cost to mail was 44 eurocents, 20% below the federal system price. Postmark date is 12 December, 2011.
