I have these two stamps that I think are Scott 179.

The first one looks to me like it has a forged cancel. Just looks wrong to me. It also has a strange shape on the forehead, that looks like the number 6 or letter b above the eye.

Is the second a kiss print/overinked ?.

I'm assuming the "6" is normal. I checked a copy of mine and it also looks like a 6. I think it's just the way the engraving lines stack up. I also think the cancel is fine on the first one and is simply a Chicago duplex cancel with a clean strike. Why fake a cancel on a cheap stamp? Unused with gum catalogs at $700 while $25.00 used, no incentive to put a fake cancel on this stamp.

I agree with stallzer that the cancel on the first stamp is okay.

The second stamp is either overinked or the printing plate wasn't thoroughly cleaned. No big deal in either case.

stallzer. hy-brasil. Thanks.

I have far too many forgeries in my collection. So when I see something that does not look quite right, I just assume its a wrong un, until I am told otherwise.

It used to really annoy me when I found one. But lately, forgeries seem to fetching good money. In some cases, more than the real thing. Some love them, some hate them. I am somewhere in the middle.
