Hi
I recently found in I one of my boxes of stamps an envelope full of internal revenue stamps, such as for wine sales and stock transfer. Most of then also have "Documentary"on them. Does anyone collect them and how can I find out their value? I'll try to post a picture of them tomorrow.

Jim

Yes, Jim, there are many who collect revenue stamps (as compared to postage stamps).

These stamps will be listed in both the Scott Standard Catalog Volume 1 and the US Specialized Catalog. They are listed at the back of the US section -- the catalog number prefix is R###.

Hi
I am looking at an ebay offering for Documentary Internal Revenue Scott # R733
I collect engraved stamps and from the picture the building appears to be engraved. I am looking for confirmation that this stamp is engraved. Would anyone know about this stamp and where I can confirm or deny if it is engraved?

Yes, it is engraved and is what is known a Giori press printing. After WW II a new device revolutionized multicolor engraving around the world. The Giori press—named for its inventor, Gualtiero Giori—permitted two-color or even three-color engraving from a single plate, in one pass through the press. The secret was in the rubber inking rollers. The surfaces were precisely cut, applying each ink selectively to parts of the same plate.

I concur with stallzer that the stamp is engraved and printed by the Giori press. The Scott No. of the stamp Bacchus illustrated is R733. I believe it is the only revenue stamp issued to commemorate an event, i.e., the establishment of the Internal Revenue Service. If I'm wrong on this, I have no doubt that I'll be corrected quickly.
