I am confused in regards to the 1st stamp (stamp 4 at the top). Philb indicates that it is Brazil Scott#218 "topic aviation". My standard catalogues show "aviation" as design A75, which depicts a 100r stamp. The stamp description for #218 indicates design A73 10r red violet", however, design A73 shows the 10r "railroad" stamp. Can someone help me out of the maze I seem to be in. |

"Aviation" 10r deep brown , red brown 1931-34 Scott 326 10r deep brown "Watermark 222- CORREIO BRASIL and 5 stars in squared ircle" 1936-37 Scott 431 10r deep brown "Watermark 249- "CORREIO BRASIL", multiple, letters 7 mm high" 1939 Scott 467 10r red brown "Watermark 256- "CASA+DA+MOEDA+DO+BRASIL" in 7+-8mm high letters" 1940-41 Scott 488 10r red brown " Watermark 264- "(star)CORREIO(star)BRASIL(star), multiple, letters 7mm high"
Comments Although the aviation design was introduced in 1920, this denomination was not used until 1931. All of these watermarks are distinctive, so little confusion should arise. The 1939 wmk 467 is slightly less common (CV $1)

jkjblue: WOW! thanks for all that. My intention was to work my way down through the images but as I understand it none of the images can be designated (other than to stamp design numbers) given that the applicable watermarks have not been indicated? The aviation theme stamp is pretty subtle. |

Quote: My intention was to work my way down through the images but as I understand it none of the images can be designated (other than to stamp design numbers) given that the applicable watermarks have not been indicated? Correct. The Brazil definitives for these years have multiple watermarks, and the watermark needs to be determined in order to assign a specific catalogue number. |

If there is a stamp series that strikes terror in the philatelic hearts of WW classical stamp collectors, the 1918-41 definitives of Brazil (Sιrie vovσ) may be at the top of the list. Consider.... Unwatermarked, 11 different watermarks!, and a watermark variation are found Spans 23 years with 17 issues of 3-22 stamps 41 significant face different or major color change groupings 149 spaces in the Steiner album for this series There is now some additional help. check out.... http://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.co...1Stamps.html |

Jkjblue, A very informative blog post! I really liked the way you captured the different watermarks in the photos! It is more helpful to me to see a watermark on an actual stamp as opposed to a picture. That couldn't have been an easy task. Most of the Brazil stamps I've watermarked had pretty weak watermarks. Quote: That couldn't have been an easy task. Most of the Brazil stamps I've watermarked had pretty weak watermarks. Dan- I agree that a pic of the watermarks is more informative - or, at least offers an additional perspective, to the watermark illustrations in the catalogue. Brazil watermarks aren't really too bad to see- it is a matter though, of trying to identify them. I've been able to have ~ 75% success rate in identifying watermarks "for sure". But that still leaves a pile of stamps. |

I have about the same success rate. Of course the more you do, the easier it gets. It's a frustrating series though. It's not like you can throw up a scan here and have another pair of eyes double check. As you correctly said, it's the watermark that tells the tale. My success rate in scanning watermarks is miserable. Dan |
