Good Afternoon,

I have a 1903-1905 Panama 1p stamp that has a double overprint. What's also special about this stamp is it has 3 of the "PANAMA" overprints going up and 1 "PANAMA" going down.

Please have a look at let me know what I should identify this stamp and what a possible value may be. I use Scott numbers regularly.

Panama measures 13 mm.

Thanks for looking

I am no expert, but this stamp looks funny to me. If I had the stamp I would contact the Canal Zone Study Group and see if someone there could give an opinion. The reason it looks funny to me is the fact that I has a double overprint, one of which is narrower. One would think they would both be the same width?

This is likely Scott #184b. #184 is an overprinted stamp with a new surcharge/overprint.

If you look carefully, there are two different shades of red. The brighter shade includes the middle solid bar at top and the outer PANAMAs that both read going up. The darker shade includes the grainier wider bar at top, the two inner PANAMAs (one reading up, the other down), and the 5 cts surcharge.

You will find that this "b" variety is unpriced in Scott as it has been since at least 1916. Whether that means it's valuable or not is unknown, nor can I say both overprints are genuine though everything looks basically correct to me. However, be aware that there are many more errors and varieties for this 1906 issue than is listed in Scott, so there may not be much of a premium for the varieties that are Scott-listed but unpriced.

Thank you hy-brasil - and I just found this on stampworld this morning as well. It looked so unusual but so do most of the panama / canal zone overprints.
