A friend of mine is out at The Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo in Long Beach, CA. Siegel has a table there, and have with them some highlights from the first part of the Bill Gross U.S. collection. Pretty cool stuff!

Yea I got the brochure by mail last night.
There are a couple things in there that might have opening bids under $50K. Budget items.

Seriously, its some really fun stuff to see.
Large multiples, rare covers, great stamps.

I bet SAN chokes that day, with people monitoring the sale.

I will buy something that I need from one of the upcoming Gross sales, just to own a piece of this legendary collection. But realistically, most of his stamps are probably well north of my checkbook!

"Sorry honey, I sold the house to buy #1 & #2 multiples out of the Bill Gross sale." .......Some how, I just don't think that will go over well.

Are we going to see a mint/unused Scott #5 ? The Smithsonian doesn't have one, Siegel doesn't list one in their archives, & the Philatelic Federation only has 3 listings including the block of 8.

I assume we're going to see the Z grill.

Sale of the Gross collection is supposed to take place starting in the Fall and run over multiple auctions with the last one being the singles. No problem seeing this thing stretch out for a year, plus.

I wonder if they are going to sell the Z grill separately - or in a later sale, since I've seen no publicity about it yet. I guess we'll see.

As many others probably I wonder: It is called the Gross "collection". So what would be the reason for a "collector" to sell all these wonderful items? Either it's not a "collection" as I understand it, or the money is needed (which would not be the case if he is donating it)...? Has he talked about this, or do we know from other similar sales?

He has been selling off much of his material for a number of years, I believe some of the proceeds have previously been donated to charities.
