Bill Gross's philosophy has always been that collections are to be transferred, and his role is that of a temporary custodian. Obviously as a highly successful bond manager, he doesn't need the money. From my understanding, all proceeds are going to his foundation. As far as the Z Grill, it will be auctioned in the final sale with his national album. It is considered the only complete United States singles collection, similar to the Eliasberg coin collection. This is a monumental sale, and as collectors, represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. |

ok, as said my understanding of a collection would be another, but of course it is fine if he gives others the opportunity to get some of those items.
do you mean an album with all US singles, so also for example the Lost Continental? |

He did what he set out to accomplish: a complete collection of every U.S. postage stamp. Now, he's giving everyone an opportunity to get a piece for their collection.
I will definitely be adding the hardbound catalog to my library when it becomes available. |

Received my Bill Gross Treasures of Philately preview publication in the mail today from Siegel. Wow. Simply stunning material. Now if I could only win Powerball. |

Quote: ok, as said my understanding of a collection would be another I cannot see any reason why the Gross material in the aggregate would not be considered a collection (as opposed, I take it, to a mere accumulation). In fact, it is THE collection. |

It was. Among the literature in the PF library is a complete photo record of the Ferrari Collection, one of only a tiny handful of sets that exist. It is 50 8.5x11 three ring binders, each with about 300 photos in it. Each photo is one page of the collection. I once had to replace all the photos when the binders popped open during a move, so I really am familiar with them. :-) |

Quote: If there ever was a THE collection, I think it would have been Ferrary's I can only speak for NSW stamps, but when I see material noted from the Ferrary collection each item is always miles more attractive than the average. |

There's a nice little story in the Royal Collection volume that would give postal history collectors kittens, vis-a-vis Ferrary's dislike of having stamps on letters, and his purchase of the 80c Provisional Government of Modena stamp on letter. He immediately tore the stamp from the corner and put the remainder of the envelope in the waste-paper basket. Interestingly, GV declined to bid for the 1c magenta at the Ferrary sale. |

As many of you already know, the final segment of the Bill Gross collection to be auctioned will be his national album. It literally is a complete album of United States stamps, and with the inclusion of the 1c Z grille, is the only such collection to ever be assembled. Quality-wise, I do not know how it compares to the Ferrary collection. However, Bill Gross owns many stamps that pedigree from that collection. Also, it is important to note, that Gross is a philanthropist. The entire proceeds of the sale will be donated to his foundation and charities. I can understand his quest to complete the United States collection, and the fact that once he attained that goal, continued ownership was anti-climatic. At this juncture of his life, I believe he feels it is time to move on, and share this great assemblage with collectors throughout the world. |

hello, this is fascinating of course. As I asked above, what does "complete" mean, all major Scott numbers, and from which year to which year? Does the collection also include the Lost Continental? And the 3c 1861 B grill? Hard to believe he could buy all those items. |

I hope Siegel scans the album as is & posts it online, similar to what they did with the Natalee Grace collection. |

My understanding is that it is complete to 1940. Why is it hard to believe that he could buy them? The man is a billionaire, he can buy anything he wants. Sooner or later they would become available. |
