well for items that are so rare there is probably more than one person in the world that could buy it. I didn't mean this because of the money but because of other people interested.

is the only such collection to ever be assembled

I thought that Zoellner also did this - i.e. 'complete' US collection.

Txstamp, you are correct. Scott R. Trepel when writing about the death of Robert E. Zoellner in 2014, noted he was apparently the only collector to have acquired every Scott listed United States stamp. Robert A. Siegel's auction catalog for Mr. Zoellner's collection which was sold October 8-10, 1998 is available online.

A bit of trivia: Zoellner's collection was housed in a Scott Platinum National album.

That auction catalogue was also hardbound. Great companion volume with White's Color Encyclopedia. The cover features the 1c Z grill.

....and Gross's collection is in a National Album, as well? (coincidentally, so is mine). What's the saying about imitation being the greatest form of flattery?

....and thank you for the insight on Zoellner. I knew that his collection was world-class, but did not realize that it was equally as complete as Bill Gross's. It's really amazing that 2 people could actually do that. Irrespective of the money, I'm not sure that it would ever be possible to get another Eliasberg collection in numismatics. The ultra-rare coins have become too scattered for one person to have them all.

Interesting news segment on CNBC today talking with Bill Gross and his thoughts on selling his collection. Also discusses three items that will be up for sale.

litleriverphil, always when I read "White encyclopedia" I read twice and again... Did Siegel in your opinion a good job in printing this catalog of Zoellner to get an idea of some stamp colors? Or is there a newer Siegel catalog featuring all/most of the US classic stamps?

(yes, I know that those colors are not 100% accurate, just would like to know if one can get an idea or if Siegel just didn't care at all about the colors and they are mostly not accurate).

Yes. I have White's Color plates ( I think they are from Vol II) showing shades of 1869 Issue and 1875 re-Issue, all the large banknotes, and the 1892 Columbian Exposition Issue, minus the $5, Volume III, text and plates, Issues of 1894 = 1907, and the text and color plates for the blue/Chine Clap papers issues. Also have White's Color in Philately.
To my eye, Seigel's hardbound Zoellner catalogue was a good color match, given that White's photos are presented on a neutral gray background for all but the blue paper on orange and Seigel's are on a white background.
Hope that helps.

Sadly the Zoellner catalog is no longer available from Siegel (no surprise; it must have been pretty popular).

It was a fabulously done catalog.
One of the book dealers around might have one.

I bought the Encyclopedia pages mentioned shrink wrapped from Leonard Hartman in 1997, has since been in a Avery 1" D ring stored in a slipcase I made for it, I'm making a new binder for it now.

In the next few weeks my Zoellner Catalogue and the White Encyclopedia pages will be for sale here.

Found a copy, but thanks for the pointers. I'm pretty new to this forum, but gotta say, I appreciate the back and forth. I am really looking forward to attending the Gross Auctions. Heck, I only need a $9,000,000 to complete my US collection. Any offers?
