I've been soaking stamps lately and there has been some problem with red cancellations bleeding. Any suggestions?

How long do you soak and what kind of medium do you use? Like if you use warm water inks are more likely to run

I soak them in lukewarm water until the stamps come off the paper.

Is the red from the cancellations or is it oxidation being washed off?

You could use a sweat box or just wet the paper with a sponge or paint brush and try not to get any water on the face of the stamp.

I just wonder, if the cancellation ink goes off, couldn't that be a fake cancellation? After all, the ink used to cancel stamps is supposed to be permanent and unwashable

Colored cancels often fade when soaked in warm water.

Littleriverphil, yes, I have seen it a few times on 19th Century GB stamps canceled with non-black ink, but nothing like bleeding the ink ... Even the stamps printed with water-soluble ink, they lose clarity but still no bleeding

Yes, some red inks that the USPS uses for cancellation will run. They'll run with soaking and run when removing self adhered using Fresh Fruit.
