Hi Everyone,

I found this stamp on a sheet with other later years originals, however it was placed on side instead of a specific designated year.
Since they have many forgeries of this stamp printed, would this be considered another fake? The print writing on the bottom seems to be spaced correctly, but not sure about the cancellation markings. The ones I have seen, has a date in the middle. It looks like
another cancellation on bottom of this printing too.
Any information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Genuine ones were printed on a roughish paper with the red/magenta background here more like a layer of paint that smoothed out the surface somewhat. That color can crack. Note that there is a little erosion from the cancel, too. Dark red is a legitimate color though there is a (deep) magenta that the catalogs use to describe this.

See: http://stampforgeries.com/forged-st...a-1850-1860/ and
http://stampforgeries.com/album-wee...tish-guiana/ , I think a different one is described here.
Yours compares well with the genuine, I think. Not a really good forgery sitting next to the genuine ones -- pink, for one(??).

There is a perfed reprint where perfs have been cut off to simulate the original, though I've never seen one.

Note there is also another cancel over/under the (usual) DEMERARA. We're probably looking at parts of both in the central date part.

Thank you so much for the information provided above. Excellent information pertaining to the British Guyana vintage stamps with comparison for genuine vs forgeries. The paper appears thick, but does not feel smooth, although, it looks like a slight gloss placed on this stamp. All the other markings looks to match for a genuine stamp with magenta color, writings and markings required.
With your information provided in your second link, I believe now it is probably another forgery since any slight gloss may be considered a factor to rule out from a genuine stamp.

I think Randy was making the point that British Guiana is only spelt one way, as opposed to independent Guyana.

Lioness2, the slight gloss probably comes from rubbing against covering paper or an album page. Don't expect anything close to full catalog value since it's not 4 full margins all around. And it still could be a reprint with perfs trimmed off. Still looks legit to me with the cancels.

Perf12, the paper is surfaced with a paint-like ink, the red/magenta color. I believe this is part of the paper used (contractor's paper?) and the black stamp design was the only thing printed on it. So on cutting the stamp from the sheet, the paper color shows at the edges. The paper seems to be like the medium weight type used for British Commonwealth stamps around this time, so it's thick enough to show that edge cut. Plus that surface color is kind of fragile.
