Lets not forget that is, perhaps, one of most famous swords (at least, on the Western world): King Arthur's Excalibur. Featured on the 1985 British Arthurian Legends issue. |

Martin was still a soldier in the Roman army and deployed in Gaul, when he one day met a scantily clad beggar at the gate to Amiens. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. That night, Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. He heard Jesus say to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized; he has clad me." The dream confirmed Martin in his piety, and he was baptized; in 372 he became the bishop of Tours. Georges Muguet created the life-size sculpture on the tower in Tours (1962). (Alexey, Does your collection contain everything from stone to steel? also bow and arrow? I will look for more as long as they are NOT sports, OK? K.) |

Saint Martin pictured as a roman soldier most likely would have looked. In the stamp of France, above, he is already a saint, shown in fine clothes although he preferred simple garb. Charity stamp for helping the needy in the winter. |

In the painting by van Dyck (1599-1641) Martin looks like a medieval knight in full armor. The powerful-looking man in the foreground does not occur in the legends. Stamp of Ruanda, 1967. (Hi Alexey, You are right, it's amazing how many versions of St Martin there are, K.) |

St Martin was portrayed as a knightly saint for the Christmas charity stamp of 1984. The color of his robe is different from one issue/country to the next. Artwork by Peter Steiner. (Alexey, What connection is there between your city and Bad Orb over in Hessen? Is the statue a copy? Are the two cities partner cities? The Statue in Bad Orb stands at the park of the spa gardens. K.) |

St. Martin is the patron saint of the Burgenland province of Austria. In this stamp of 1985 he is featured for the city of Eisenstadt. Many cities, towns and villages of central Europe celebrate St Martins Day on the 11th of November with pageants and processions. Martin in the photograph is wearing a Roman helmet. Good Morning Alexey, Thanks for your historical perspective! K. |

another Catholic bishop with a sword. This is very surprising, because in Orthodoxy the priest can not take up arms. |
