The painting by van Dyck seen above appeared on a stamp issued by Paraguay in 1971. I shall revise the 'full armor' of my earlier post since Martin is not wearing a helmet, he was traveling when he met the beggar, not fighting. |

The invasion of the Isle of Man by the Vikings was featured on their stamp of 1983. The double-bladed battle ax the leader is carrying looks like an awfully effective weapon; he seems to be carrying a sword as well. By the way, only one Viking helmet has so far been found in Norway, it did not have any sings of mounted horns. Alexey, do you know more about the kind of metal used for this kind of weapon? K. |

everything about the Vikings is found just in England, Germany, France ... there is nothing left in Scandinavia ... everyone has sailed away! Hi, Kris! Unfortunately horned helmets and double-wedge axes of scandinaviens are fantasy artists and Hollywood |

Evald Aav (1900-1939) was an Estonian composer. He wrote primarily vocal music to words in the Estonian language and composed the first national Estonian opera, Vikerlased (The Vikings), which premiered in 1928. The Viking depicted in the stamp is probably Ülo, the tragic hero and the two women are probably Juta and Valke. 2006 Hi Alexey, I knew about the horned helmets, but not about the axes. K |

This souvenir sheet featuring the Viking probe to Mars is fun although it looks very much like one of those agency productions that never even visited the country of Niger itself. Alexey, Do battle axes of this sort have any special name? |

these are the horns (used for ritual purposes) from Denmark, from where the legend of the horned Viking helmets went I'm not a expert in English terminology, all I've seen in the special literature about normann is a common for all Scandinavians name of OXA, sometimes the name of big axes was mentioned - miklaoxa |

The Sword of Light (Claíomh Solais) plays an important role in the mythology and legends of Ireland. This design is featured in Irish definitives beginning in 1923 and lasting till the end of the 1960s. Note also the Celtic winged serpent. Happy St Patrick's Day. (Hello Alexey, Interesting to see where the horns came from! K.) |
