Dear Friends

Kindly I need to ask if this stamp ( D.Hammerskjold ) has any value specially it is with the inverted yellow color and first day issue .

Also I need to know how was the first day issue for this stamp in 1962 and the stamp of Brookline has a date 1967 ?

Regards

The earlier stamp has simply been added to the new Kennedy stamp to contrive a rather inappropriate peace-themed cover - it's not the first day of issue of the Hammerskjold stamp.

You asked about the value of the Dag Hammarskjöld inverted yellow color stamp (Scott 1204). If you had 100 of them you might find someone willing to pay as much as $5 for the lot. In other words these are so common that they have very little commercial value. In the original printing of these by the post office this error was discovered, but the Postmaster General immediately decided to make the error worthless and ordered another 40 million stamps intentionally printed with the inverted yellow. So these are no more rare than any other ordinary US commemorative stamp of the 1960s.

Contrived is a bit strong of a word, tie-in would be better. Since the first day cover collecting is for ones pleasure only I see the reason for doing it, in fact I have one with both Hammarskjold issues on it. Yes there worthless, but fun to do.

My latest cover of the jazz singer Lena Horne has a Stormy Weather cachet along with a Harold Arlen tie in stamp, composer of the signature Lena Horne song. Value of it is $1.00. Have fun doing it.

Simple combinations are indeed limited in value. However, multiple stamps and cachets that tie-in with the theme of the combinations & First Day add to the value.

Here's one I made in 1984 - only 5 were made and I have one left in my own collection. Several have offered me $25+ for it.

Making your own covers with creative groupings of old and new stamps or making your own cachets or making your own special ways of carrying them such as in your backpack on a 25 mile bike ride to some small post office or tied to a 2 liter plastic bottle of Coke that you drop a few mentos in so that it blasts off across the your yard or a small stream or whatever you can think of is priceless in terms of fun. Swapping them with like-minded collectors makes it even more fun. Or making up your own labels on your computer or hand painting your own cachets, etc. The possibilities are endless and it costs you next to nothing for most of these. Stamp and cover collecting is a great hobby and more people should do it.
