The typewritten notes on the cover are to indicate that these were postmarked on the first day on which the stamp was issued. In the 1960s, we were all told how valuable first day covers would be. Unfortunately, in the main, they're worth next to nothing.
It sure would be nice if so many of you on this forum would stop bashing FDCs as totally worthless. They are NOT! There are groups of items in every collecting arena that are limited in value. And, yes, it applies to stamps as well. There are many first day covers that people pay $250+ for! Generally speaking, the "near worthless" would be the mass produced cachet designs (Artcraft, Artmaster, Fleetwood, Readers Digest, etc.) and uncacheted FDCs. The same applies for U.S. FDCs and worldwide.
I don't think anyone has suggested that FDCs are universally worthless. What is undoubtedly true is that, for many years, people, many of them not really stamp collectors, were sold a pup.
Collecting, whatever you enjoy collecting, is a hobby for your personal enjoyment. If you want a blood sport play golf. If you want an investment by bitcoins. Enjoy.

I've played some pretty tough courses (Pete Dye's Blackwolf Run, Koler, WI, slope 156) and it beat me, but no blood. You guys must play a more dangerous game than I do.
