The first stamp is a shade variety of the second stamp. There are a wide variety of shades of the 1899-1907 issues.

The third stamp is the rose colour.

Hope this helps!

Point of interest:
The top corners each feature the "Ekirei",
the bell to comandeer coolies and stage-horses, in ancient Japan.

Be cautious on ascribing a "shade" to a used stamp. It may have suffered from excessive soaking, or hot water, and faded in previous ownership.

Just curious: Is there any difference in the texture of the stamps? The second one is so much clearer than the first, it makes me think there was a different printing process altogether. Maybe engraved?

As an aside, I've never heard of ekirei associated with the commandeering of workers, just horses. The "eki" means "station", as in a stop where where the nobility could change horses.

there is a small difference between the thickness of the two stamps the violet brown is a little thicker than the orange brown.

I measured them with a Digital Caliper the violet brown was 0.13mm and the orange brown was 0.11mm

Good one, Rod.
