I have not been able to identify these stamps. These were in a small collection I inherited, and I have very little knowledge of stamps in general. Anyone know what these are? Thank you.
The United States Letter Express stamps are bogus stamps imitating US local post stamps (listed with an L prefix in the Scott Specialized Catalogue). Even though they are not real stamps, they are a popular collecting area and the stamps are priced at $15 each in the Lyons Pricing Guide for Unlisted Carriers, Locals, Fakes Forgeries and Bogus Posts of the United States. You have examples of each of the 5 reported denominations (1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 cents)
No, there are no catalog numbers. They are listed in Larry Lyons' three volume identifier of Carrier and Local Post stamps and forgeries. The US Letter Express is one of many bogus issues of unknown origin. It was probably made in the 1870s or 1880s when many of the other forgeries and bogus issues were made.
