Hello Cover Community!
This turned up in an old collection. No one has ever seen one like this. Some say Unique Freak, some say Production Error (it has to be the whole sheet that was miscut). The measurements are spot on. The sheet was probably fed inverted, before cutting. Does the Community have any thoughts? Thank You!

In later years, people could buy entire uncut sheets of the postal cards. This lead to them cutting them into unusual configurations which today do not command much other than as curiosity items. But I do not know when the post office started this practice, we will have to wait for some of the postal card experts to weight in. This one appears to be a mis-cut.

Yes, it is a Leavitt machine cancel. They were used in about 25-30 towns.

The UPSS Postal Card Catalog states that sale of full sheets (4 x 10) is probable. Miscut cards are known with the preprinted message sides properly centered. This tells us that the customer took delivery of sheets of cards and took them to a printer to get the message side printed. Someone could then have cut them up however they wanted.

This doesn't prove anything one way or the other about the OP's card. But in cases such as these, most people assume these cards are essentially philatelic pranks.

That being said, the catalog also observes that no multiples of this issue are known. And, my opinion here, the typical collector-created miscut is usually not of this format.

Every definitive postal card has been available to the public in sheets. Although it is possible that a few miscut postal cards were released by the printing contractor, no reliable expertizing service would issue a certificate stating that the miscut definitive postal card is a genuine error. A genuine miscut postal card (miscut in production) is an error, not a freak.
