m and m - The manufacturers had warehouses that served several states. So it was easier to place several stamps on the tags than to risk putting the proper stamp on the tag when the mattress was shipped. We see this with Simmons in particular. These stamps had face values of no more than 2 cents, so multiple stamps on a tag was a minuscule amount to insure that it would be in compliance to the state to which the mattress was shipped. This has nothing to do with traveling through the various states. Wherever the mattress is sold, it must comply with that state's laws. When on display the tag and stamp were required by law. When it was in your house and being used to snooze on, the requirement of the tag and stamp no longer applied.

Thanks Ron. I didn't think the traveling idea was correct, but knowing how much the states like tax money..........
