Looks like Wrisley BD2 which came into use in 1953 and has a catalogue value of $4.00. Real value is probably much less.

The bedding and upholstery stamps typically sold for about 2¢. After they were discontinued by most states in the early 1960's there were quite a few of these from Maine and other states that have found their way to the marketplace. I would agree with Bill Crowe's assessment of value, much less than $4.00. The number 836 is the state registration number of the user.

I actually had an office chair at work in the early 2000s that still had a tag with the stamp on it. Was probably bought in the 1960s. I removed and still have the tag....

Here's a bunch I found in a recently purchased lot. I don't have the SRS Catalogue, so I haven't found all the numbers and C/V values yet.

The fun tags are the ones with multiple state stamps on them. I once saw a tag with 7 different states on it. Unfortunately it was in an album auction lot and I was never able to find out who won it.

if the manufacturer placed a stamp on the tag why would multiple state stamps be required? he would know where the item was being wholesaled and could stamp accordingly. even at one cent each the extras it cost would add up.
if the retailer placed the stamp then again why would multiple state stamps be required?

Mass produced furniture from large manufacturers might have several locations to send a product. Saved time to just put them all on in the beginning, that way it could go anywhere originally or be sent as a special order to any location the company served. They are scarce because once someone bought the furniture the tags were usually thrown away.

Some states might also have required them just to travel through on the way to another state.

do any of you state revenuers know anything about the laws? I still think the mfr. would not want to have to deal with "x" number of state tax stamps if his product was not being sold there. you still have not answered my questions. I don't question there scarcity or existence, but that the requirements of one state inspections would not be enough for all. as to transit thru from state to state that would be most unlikely and very hard to enforce.
