This stamp apparently does not exist with the red overprint, only with a blue. I'd like to find out if it's genuine. I've had the scan examined and am told it looks genuine, but you'd actually have to have the actual stamp subjected to chemical analysis to establish that the red ink is the same type that was used at the time.

Does anyone have any experiences expertising Russian stamps? If so, recommendations would be welcome.

Not going to be easy. My first suggestion would be Sismondo. I have no direct experience with them, but they've advertised in the Scott catalogs for years. You'd have to ask, but I believe they do worldwide, or at least a large part of the world...

Try Leon Finik, who is an acknowledged world expert on Imperial Russian stamps. His website is http://russianstamps.com and contact details are on there.

I would suggest Paul Buchsbayew of Cherrystone, paulb@cherrystoneauctions. He is one of 6 people listed on the A.I.E.P. website (http://www.aiep-experts.net/experts/experts.html) for Russia. There is another expert in Germany who is noted for Imperial Russia. Start with Paul Buchsbayew and see what he suggests.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did write to Cherrystone about the stamp but received no reply. Do you think it's because I did not write to PB specifically?

In the circumstances, Finik might be the better choice.

Michel mentions this stamp with a red overprint as a fake.

I'm assuming here that it's the vertically laid stamp Mi 9.

There is something blue over the blk.cancel.
There seems to be a difference in the serifs in the K whether it's
a blk. ovpt. or red ovpt. The upper serif tends to extend out more in the red ovpt. Also the blk. ovpt is much sharper...thoughts...
