Good Morning, It's early here but I would like a possible confirmation on the letters of this penny red stamp. It appears to be CCCC all around and I don't believe that's possible. Please correct me if I'm wrong and let me know what the letters could be. I don't have a table of all the letters or a good resource on hand - I've been googling though.

I think these are the 1858 and after printings. The lower letters were were the same as the top letters but reversed. In this case C & C. |

Hi souldjer777, These stamps were printed in sheets of 240, 20 rows across and 12 columns down. The stamp in the top left corner of the sheet will have the letters AA. The stamp on the first row at the far right will have the letters AL. The stamp in the bottom left corner will have the letters TA and the stamp in the bottom right corner will have the letters TL. Hope this helps |

To add a couple more tid bits:
The first versions only had letters at the bottom corners - the row on the lower left corner and the column on the lower right - so AA, top left stamp on the sheet, to TL, bottom right stamp on the sheet.
When the "letters in 4 corners" versions were issued, they reversed the letters and put them at the top. So, stamp from the 4th row (D), 5th position from right (F) will have DF at the bottom and FD at the top. Yours was row C, column C, so it ended up with Cs in all four corners.

Quote: 5th position from right (F) Wouldn't it be from the left (in which case it would be an E)? FD would be the 4th stamp in the 6th row? Or do I need another coffee? |

No. You're right. I need to learn to spell and count. Ignore the above.
