I saw these two identical stamps, one with a date from 2005, the other without, from 2008.
Is it common in German postal stamps to issue the same stamp?

Hi! They're not identical. The one without date (Michel 2701) is self-adhesive.

That means that whoever I got it from - did a very good job removing it: There's no sign on the back that it was self-adhesive (those are hard to remove, I remember).

All of the modern Germany sel-adhesive tampsI have encountered are easy to soak off the envelope paper. This is because they are manufactured with a water-soluble layer of material between the paper and the self-adhesive material.

Almost all countries do not put a water-soluble layer on their stamps, thus making them more difficult to re-use if they go uncancelled.

Rob,

have a goood look at the corner holes! They are larger than all the other ... The "teeth" are sharply cut not torn ....
