I know I've read about it somewhere, but can't remember where and a google search returns garbage. So, can anyone tell me what the emblem in the center of this stamp means? Thanks so much! Dot

It's a tughra, the calligraphic monogram of an Ottoman Sultan. Given the date of this stamp (1901), this would be the tughra of Abdul Hamid II.

Thank you, erilaz! It always reminds me of the witch on the Wizard of Oz, riding a bicycle in front with a broomstick in back. Please note, no disrespect is intended here to anyone!

In some places it's spelled Toughra so if you are searching try both terms. I'm not saying Erilaz is wrong, just pointing out a variety. I agree the Toughra reminds me of a witch on a broomstick.
what do the Tughra on stamps of other Sultans look like? or was Sultan Abdul Hamid the only one with Stamps?

There's a very similar emblem on some Saudi stamps, so I tend to get them confused.
