I picked this up recently, it's looks like an RM561 dated Nov 26, 1799. Can anyone help me decipher this? Thirty one/2 Gallons? One B-- of Rum? As I'm not very familiar with these, I welcome any info anyone can provide. Thanks!
This is an import document. The importer posted bond to pay the import duties (after they had sold the rum). And yes, it has a supervisor's seal on it (RM561) that validates the document. This document accompanied the rum until the container was empty.
When I can access my reference materials I will define the proof in modern terms and get the rate of taxation. These were well explained in an ARA publication about thirty years ago by the late Admiral Combs.
Building on the Nov^r near the end of the form, with 3 initial letters and a superscripted last letter, that the duties are on one bar^l, rather than a final flourish. I agree the volume is 31 1/2 gallons.
