I'd like to ask for some information on the DR 1936 Scott # B82. I have asked around, but have not been able to obtain any reliable information. Any help here would be appreciated. Pete
This is a special postmark of the nazi regime's postal service. I believe there were special stations, or areas where the postmarks were applied for a limited number of days. Also, I believe the postmarks were restricted to the use of semipostal stamps. I'm not sure if there were additional fees required...beyond the extra cost for the semipostal/charity charge of the stamps.
There were 13 special postmark stations in Berlin during the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, if my memory is correct.
Die Sonderpostaemter der Deutschen Reichspost 1933-1945 by W. Reck and F. W. Schemers lists all of these special postmarks.
A special postmark was very different from a pictorial cancel. There were many hundreds of pictorial cancels from the third reich period, but not so many special postmarks.
These are venue cancels which were used extensively during the 1936 Olympic Summer Games. Some are very common and are easily found used on post cards and envelopes sent from the games. There are scores of varieties since each hand cancel device had a small letter below the device. A similar type device was used in Kiel.
