Hello forum,

Is anyone familiar with the Jean de Sperati reproductions of Hawaiian numeral stamps?

I came across a few and they have on the reverse a yellow oval with "SPERATI" in black letters.

I have researched the other reverse signatures and markings but have not had this type of reverse (the yellow oval) confirmed for the Hawaiians.

Your assistance and thoughts are appreciated.

They are not genuine Sperati's.

Without seeing the actual stamps, it is difficult to say whether or not they are "genuine" Sperati's. However, your handstamp is not one of the handstamps used by the BPA (who bought out Sperati and marketed the later examples of his forgeries) or by Sperati himsself.

Does anyone have a genuine Hawaiian Numeral that they can hold up to the light as in the picture above?

Thanks.

By the link given and copy of Sperati book, this is unfortunately not a Sperati. It is a pretty good forgery, however, except the paper is incorrect. This shows laid lines or ribbing and has a very uneven surface on both sides. Genuine are on blue/light blue thin smooth machine-made wove paper, much like blue wove writing paper and similar to US aerogramme paper used later. #22b is on grayish white paper but that should be on wove paper also.

EDIT: Also, it may just be the scan, but the genuine paper is blue all the way through, not just colored on the face as this one appears to be, which is also colored unevenly.
