This June 1, 1971 stamp (Facit #695) of Finland commemorates the bicentenary of the country's first newspaper, which was printed in Swedish. Incredibly, the small type is reasonably clear under 10X. |

France 1964, "À Tous les Français" issued on the 20th anniversary of liberation. Design and engraving by Jacques Combet. Featuring the words of DeGaulle given in his famous BBC speech which came the day after Petain had declared fighting must end. DeGaulle was particularly trying to keep French soldiers in active arms, a number of whom were in England after being evacuated from Dunkirk two weeks earlier. In 1964 he was President of France when Scott B378 [Maury 1408]was issued. |

Bumped into this yesterday when pursuing a topical I wanted. Dominican Republic, 1938, Sc. 335-337. There are other design elements of course, but the triangle filled with words caught my attention and made me think of this thread. Scott calls it the "pledge of trinitarians," but even with rudimentary Spanish I could see it was not the Nicene creed, so I had to look it up. The Society of Trinitarians was a secret group, originally of 9 members organized into cells of 3, formed by Juan Pablo Duarte in 1838 to pursue Dominican independence. Sanchez and Mella were the other principals involved who carried out the 1844 revolution establishing independence. So this must be their oath. |
