Is there any way to tell the two apart other than the watermark? I have a few on cover and I cannot tell if they are E4 or E5. Is there a way to check watermarks while on cover?
Thanks for any help.
Robert

Earliest documented use of E5 is 03OCT1895 according to my Scotts, so anything before that date is undoubtedly E4.
Anything after 1895 is probably E5. E4 usually has 'fuzzier' perfs, ala the 1894 unwatermarked small banknotes.
If the color is sharp dark blue, probably E5.

E5 also has a couple of listed plate varieties that do not occur on E4, the dots in the arc over the postal worker and the line through postal.
