Does this scott 351 joint line pair look genuine?

https://m.ebay.com/itm/nystamps-US-...382467302085

I know there are tons of caveats in buying Washington Franklin coils, and particularly from this seller. The perforation holes though look possibly genuine. What specifically is wrong with this?

Run (do not walk) away. Flat plate coil perf holes would almost never, ever line up.

It is fake. The perfs are horrible.

Shown below is a genuine pair from Siegel and the subject pair.

Do not buy these without a cert. The folks bidding on this are clueless.

Don: What do you mean the perf holes never lineup? I'm trying to learn more about Washington franklins and the specifics of printing types is very confusing. I appreciate your help

The perf holes line up perfectly in the vertical direction ... something that very seldom happens for flat plate coils. Rotary press coils yes ... flat plate coils no. Almost certainly a fake coil pair. Any expensive flat plate W/F coil pair should be certified with the Philatelic Foundation as a condition of purchase. While the figures vary somewhat, I have heard that somewhere between 80% & 95% of W/F flat plate coils that are sold on ebay without certificates are fake. I tested this theory a couple of years ago by buying two flat plate coil pairs. I thought that one was fake & the other was probably OK. Both pairs came back from the PF as fake & were returned to the seller. Add to this situation the fact that some of the early certs may be questionable, and a recent cert becomes almost mandatory.

Forget seldom, think never. And 90% of all flat plate coils are fakes, even the cheap ones.

Do you think it's made from a 335 5c perforated 12 pair, or a 347 imperforate pair? The perforations actually look possibly real to me, which would maybe make it 335?

Fakes are made by
347 - Adding horizonal perfs and trimming vertical perfs
347E - Adding horizonal perfs
335 - Trimming vertical perf(s)

Run away from this listing. Run away from this seller. If you are in the market for Washington/Franklin coils you need to find a quality seller and/or buy stamps with existing certifications.

A $2500 cv coil pair is at auction on ebay by NYStamps wit no certificate and with a starting bid of ONE CENT. What could possibly go wrong. Yikes!

Any high value coil pair without a cert is suspect. I just got a cert on a 353 line pair - I fully expected it to fail. But it came back clean and NH - wow. It does happen!

Simple answer. Perforation rows are poorly aligned. Genuine perforation rows should be straight. While it is possible that individual bent pins could deviate from a straight line, rows are normally parallel. Unlike rotary press coil perforations that must align between rows, flat plate perforations are not expected to align between rows. Randomly spaced and aligned fake perforations could occur if holes were punched one at a time or if the machine was made with poorly aligned pins.

So I understand removing and adding perfs. Any tricks to spotting a phony guide line. The one in the auction looks a little thin and perhaps the wrong shade of blue.

Good info to know. I was about to bid on items from this seller based on reviews.
I am fairly new ...well I should say back to stamp collecting after a long hiatus.

I surely would have fallen for this. As someone did I see.

Isn't it interesting how so many of this 'large' dealers photos are clear except when a clear photo wouldn't help their ruse. If anyone could afford a quality scanner it would certainly be them!
