I'm from San Francisco, and so have always been on the lookout for Hawaiian transit cancels. US stamps were used on Hawaiian mail to the U.S. to pre-pay U.S. inland rate or ship rate because there was no postal treaty with Hawaii. The most famous of these:

This is indication IMO that it was cut by a lathe from a piece of wood. If, for instance, it was made from cork, then the sharp lines of the center would be deformed.
