Hi Gang,

Since you all did such a good job on identifying the cancel in my previous post, I'm going to try again to stump you.

Here goes, it's a 5c stamp this time, with a wood-cut killer. Can anyone identify it?

Good Luck. -AJ

and for our readers, what is your source Orstampman?

eyeonwall--Yes the center seems well defined, but the edges are worn, and that's what makes me think it's wood-cut.

Hawaian sugar cane cancel, IMO, -where did you get 'wood cut killer' from?

I think they may be right with a Hawaiian cancel.

A sugar cane cancel. Oh, I get it. I thought it was something like a cogwheel.

I'm from San Francisco, and so have always been on the lookout for Hawaiian transit cancels. US stamps were used on Hawaiian mail to the U.S. to pre-pay U.S. inland rate or ship rate because there was no postal treaty with Hawaii. The most famous of these: https://www.hawaiianstamps.com/missionary.html

Here is the sugar cane cancel again on a UPU blue stamp. Note the wear pattern around the edges is greater than in the center. This is indication IMO that it was cut by a lathe from a piece of wood. If, for instance, it was made from cork, then the sharp lines of the center would be deformed.

There was an old Linn's article that showed some sugar cane cancels. I don't recall any of them being carved. I wonder if they would have had the durability to justify the time spent carving them? I could be wrong...
