I found these two stamps in binders from a collection I recently purchased. They are Italy Scott # 125 with an A.S. stamped on back and a French Morocco # 3 with what looks like H.OVERGUIN? stamped on it. Does anyone know what these might be? Are they initials or the name of the stamps designers? Were they issued by the Post Office this way or were they stamped afterwards? Are they worth any more or any less because of it? I hope this is the correct forum and that I am correct with the Scott catalog numbers.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
Robert

They are owners/stamp dealers handstamps. They do not add value. For some they detract. Others do not care much.

That's interesting. Are there any stamps like that from famous people owning them?

In the U.S.A. you are likely to to run across a STOLOW marking, while worldwide it would probably be SENF.

J. And H. Stolow was a famous/infamous U.S. stamp auction house, while the brothers Senf (Louis and Richard) were German stamp dealers and forgers/facsimile makers of an earlier time.

Packrat, when I started collecting in the '50s the circuits that the local stampclub sent were full of stamps that had an owner's mark on the back. I believe the "H.Overduin" is one of those "security" marks, or at least it looks very much like one,

I meant that these marks ere supposed to keep folks from taking the stamps without paying for them. I guess things were a lot simple then.

I have several classic stamps with the AS stamp on reverse. I have tried for years to find out about it with no success.
